6D5N Borneo Birding – Tambunan, Trusmadi & Kinabalu Park

Upon arrival at Kota Kinabalu International Airport (BKI), you will be warmly welcomed by our representative and begin your scenic overland journey to Tambunan, located about one and a half hours from the city. Along the way, take in the picturesque landscapes of lush valleys and charming villages. Upon arrival, check in to your accommodation and receive a briefing about the birding adventure ahead, followed by dinner and a restful evening in the tranquil Tambunan highlands.

Overnight: Tambunan (Dinner)

After an early breakfast, embark on a short drive to Gunung Alab Bird Station, one of Sabah’s premier birding locations. The area’s misty montane forest is home to many sought-after species, including the Bornean Treepie, Mountain Barbet, and Indigo Flycatcher. Spend the entire day exploring both the Alab Bird Station and its sub-station, where the chorus of montane birds and the cool mountain air create a perfect setting for photography and observation. Return to Tambunan by late afternoon to relax and enjoy dinner.

Today’s adventure begins before dawn as you travel to the Trusmadi Bird Hide for a rewarding early-morning session. Enjoy your packed breakfast while waiting for rare forest species to appear at the hide. After a satisfying morning of birding, head back to Tambunan town for lunch before continuing to Trusmadi Forest Reserve for afternoon birding along its forest edge and roadside. The area is known for sightings of the Bornean Bulbul, Everett’s Thrush, and Whitehead’s Spiderhunter.

Rise early for a final birding session at Trusmadi Forest Reserve, exploring the lower montane trails one last time before departing late morning for Kinabalu Park. The three-hour journey passes scenic mountain roads with a stop for lunch en route. Upon arrival in Kundasang, check in to your lodge and enjoy a late afternoon birding session at Kinabalu Park’s lush montane trails, where species diversity reaches its peak.

Spend the day exploring Kinabalu National Park, Malaysia’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site, renowned for its incredible biodiversity. The park’s varying altitudes offer a wide range of habitats, providing opportunities to spot montane endemics such as Whitehead’s Broadbill, Crimson-headed Partridge, and Bornean Whistler. Your guide will lead you through different trails to maximize your sightings and photographic opportunities. Return to your lodge in the evening to relax and review the day’s checklist over dinner.

Overnight: Kundasang (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Enjoy a final morning birding session around the lower trails of Kinabalu Park, where early activity often brings rewarding encounters. After lunch, transfer back to Kota Kinabalu International Airport, a scenic 2.5-hour drive, marking the end of your unforgettable Borneo Birding Tour through Tambunan, Trusmadi, and Kinabalu.
